Books of the Strange Present The Satanic Bible
If the legends are true, a young musician, circus performer, police scene photographer (just a few of his claims in life that are at times corroborated) turned magician had a midlife tilt and quickly became one of the world’s most impactful people of the 20th century and is proving to enjoy that honor in the 21st. Who is this person? Known by many titles, the raddest being The Black Pope, Anton Szandor Lavey, or as we like to call him, The Devil Formerly Called Howard Stanton LaVey founded The Church of Satan (not to be confused or conflated with other organizations such as The Satanic Temple) in 1966. The formation of LaVey’s church also necessitated what every good religion needs–a book espousing the tenets of the belief system. Thus, LaVey released The Satanic Bible 1969 into the world and is still in print blowing minds today–*cough*supportyourlocalbookstore*cough*. Nerds everywhere received a fascinating mash-up of philosophy, theology, and MAGIC, DUDES, MAGIC!!! This very book was used to fuel the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 1990s by people who never read it.
