Here is the last, last of our Year of the Game Movies series…for the year. Aaaanyways gotta go fast–like the studio did when they had to fix one of that year’s worst impending nightmare flop designs–and end up making arguably one of the most wholesome, cutesy, buddy-cop comedy experiences to date (for a video game franchise). Are we ever glad they did? Sonic looked like a demonic Jim Henson’s reject (until they redid the whole shebang). If you’ve lived off the grid for the past 30 years, you may have never heard of him, but Sonic is a talking hedgehog that can run faster than the speed of sound (it’s in the name), and is sent to Earth when he’s hunted off his home planet (but…is he an alien?). After growing up on his own, he is one lonely little blue (yes, also he is blue) mascot. I mean, he has friends. Best friends. They…just don’t know he exists…yet (not a figure of speech). So after a little snafu that knocks out the power grid for the coast (not a big deal c’mon), the military sends in the Scientist Supremo himself, the Master of Murdernerds, Ivo Robotnik. If Jim Carrey came after you, you’d probably try and leave the planet too. Yeah, he’s played by Jimbo himself. It’s great. Will Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady be enough to help Sonic escape? Join Roland, Rey, and Daniel as we fail to keep it family-friendly.
